About a year ago, I expressed my consternation at the speed of “AI Development” after seeing someone make a video in English and use AI to make multiple cuts of the same video that showed him speaking a number of other languages like he was a native speaker.
My first thought was, “what’s to stop someone from using these tools to generate deep fakes with the aim of overthrowing governments or sowing seeds of discontent amongst a nation’s citizens”?
We’re starting to see the very first steps towards this awful reality with the advent of people showing up to interviews with AI bots… As I said then, the fact that we “can” make/build something doesn’t always mean we “should”.
Defenders of this acceleration towards unknown territory would point to the initial uproar against early computers but I’ll argue that this is markedly different.
I don’t have “solutions” but I believe we have to consider these problems and critically think about the direction in which we’re headed.
